Kindergarten
For children in a Montessori classroom, the third year is an “explosion” into upper level skills. Typically, this is when they reap the benefits of all the indirect preparation in the first two years. As if over night, the children begin to write, read and understand basic math concepts because they’ve been “experiencing” precursors to these upper level skills through their play. The kindergarten year really challenges the children academically and gives them the opportunity to practice and perfect their skills.
The kindergarten year also provides opportunities for the older children to be leaders, helpers and mentors for the younger children. It is a year when the kindergarten children are able to solidify their knowledge and skills by using them to help other children younger or less experienced than they are. They enjoy the privilege of giving back to the mini society that helped them when they were three years old. |
